Men Really Do Have Selective Hearing

Sign Language | Posted by About.com Deafness

The British Daily Mail reports in “When Daddy Goes Deaf: How Men Really Don’t Hear Babies Crying While Asleep,” (November 30, 2009) that they have proven through a study that sleeping men are more likely to wake up at the sound of a fly than the loud cries of a baby. Now that they have proven it, I wonder how many marriages will be saved?

Deaf Photographer Discriminated Against

Sign Language | Posted by About.com Deafness
Nov 30 2009

I was fixing broken links tonight and when fixing the article on Job Search Discrimination, I came across this October 2009 press release in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) press release database: The Picture People, Inc. Harassed and Discharged Deaf Employee. It tells about how a deaf photographer, Jessica Chrysler, was harassed and discriminated against. The EEOC filed a lawsuit on her behalf.

The EEOC gets many requests all the time from people who want the EEOC to take their case. With limited resources, the EEOC has to be very selective about whose cases they will accept for bringing suit. If they chose Ms. Chrysler’s case, then her case must have been very clearcut and serious. (The EEOC also filed suit in September 2009 in another case involving deaf applicants who were not hired because of their deafness).

The Detroit Free Press (Nov. 29, 2009) has an article about a deaf and blind dog that is helping children to understand disabilities. His human has also made him the star of a children’s book about a deaf and blind dog. The dog is appropriately named Rudolph.

Fight for Equal Access Does Not End After Retirement

Sign Language | Posted by About.com Deafness
Nov 28 2009

“Devoted Son” on the forum is asking for help with getting interpreting services for a parent in a retirement home. “Devoted Son” apparently has already tried contacting the ADA Hotline, without getting much help. Does anyone have any experience or advice for “Devoted Son?”

Meanwhile, I did some research myself to try to find out how the ADA applies to retirement communities. In this document from the state of Massachusetts, I found this statement:

…retirement communities are covered by Title III, if, they provide significant enough level of social services that they can be considered social service establishments. Social services in this context include medical care, assistance with daily living activities, provision of meals, transportation, counseling and organized recreational activities.

Nine Years Old – Hearing Loss

Sign Language | Posted by About.com Deafness
Nov 28 2009

Just approved a new posting to the Readers Respond page on parents’ reaction to hearing loss. “Guest Carrie” writes that her nine-year-old son was recently identified with a hearing loss, and she wishes that she had been more insistent with his doctors when he was younger.
