The brain is involved in the hearing process, so this rewiring means that even after an ear infection is gone, a child could still have difficulty hearing.

The study was done with rats, but has implications for humans. It is not yet known if a "lazy ear" can be treated the same way a "lazy eye" is. (Anyone remember the eye patch episode in Peanuts?) It is possible the brain can re-wire itself to hear properly. As with any study, there are unknowns. However, if further study shows that there is definitely such a risk with childhood ear infections, this could increase the pressure on parents and doctors to treat the infections - and risk overuse of antibiotics.

Starkey Laboratories just signed a deal with Nickelodeon/Viacom to feature these figments of the imagination on co-branded earmolds. This may make kids more accepting of their earmolds. I have to admit, if Batman and Robin had been available on my earmolds when I was a kid, I might have looked forward to getting new earmolds instead of dreading it!
