Stimulating Baby’s Intelligence Right from Birth

Baby Intellegent

Every baby has the capacity to be smart if we nurture him right from birth. We all love to nurture baby and be told that we have the “best kid”.

• Build baby’s self- esteem and self-confidence for life
• Enhance his communication and social skills
• Stimulate his intelligence and increase his IQ
• Teach him to sign and talk to you
• Know what baby wants thereby dissolving tantrums
• Interact and bond with baby and enjoy parenthood
• Develop smiles in baby and seldom have him cry

Signing with your baby will bring you pride and joy, and enhanced love for him. You will be able to understand your little bundle of joy, know his needs and discomforts. He will sign his pain and tell you where it hurts. On trips, for example, to the market he will able to point to the birds, trees etc as you talk to him. You will enjoy bonding with your baby. When he is able to sit up, read to him and he can point to the page of a book for whichever item you name… I guarantee that you will be amazed by his abilities!

When weaning, he can choose his own food as he will be able to point to the food he wants while you make it into a time of play. You will never see him rejecting food selected by himself. Early Signing with baby stimulates intelligence. Baby will be inquisitive and want to learn more with each passing day. This is when his IQ will increase. Have other members of the family and neighbors communicate with baby. Your baby will be sociable enjoying the company of people, even those he is not familiar with. The advantage is that you will not have separation problems when he begins preschool. There will bonding among family members too. Babies bring great happiness to a family.

What You Should Know About Teaching ASL to Babies

Understand Sign Language | Posted by admin
Jun 01 2009

It may take until your baby is 18 months old before being able to communicate his or her needs. Babies want to tell us what they want, but they can’t do it just yet because it takes longer for all the parts that form speech to develop. It’s that time gap-the desire to communicate and the inability to form the words-that often leads to frustration and tantrums.

Teaching Asl to babies

Quite by accident, researchers learned that babies born of deaf parents who are exposed to American Sign Language were consistently signing as early as seven months, and could use their tiny hands and little bodies to have a conversation by the time they were nine months old. From there, a new concept was launched: Since hand-eye coordination develops faster than speech, hearing infants can be taught simple signs to indicate what’s most important to them. “Eat,” “sleep,” “teddy bear” and “mommy” signs could make both your baby and you a lot happier, and a lot more connected.

Skeptics who thought teaching babies ASL would slow the development of their verbal skills were proven wrong. Studies have shown baby signers actually have better verbal skills than non-signing infants of the same age.

There is no harm in starting to sign to your baby as early as three months, but an infant six months old is likely to have the attention span to watch what you’re doing. Most infants exposed to simple ASL consistently will have the motor skills to begin making hand gestures and movements on their own by about their easlighth month. If you’re late, welcome to the party. You can teach your baby sign language at nine months, all the way up to 3 years.

Begin by signing a few words consistently while either pointing to or using the item. When it’s time for bed, put your palms together up to your ear, rest your head atop your hands, and close your eyes. Two thumbs up against the front of your body, raised up and down in a scrubbing motion, is any easy one for your infant to learn to associate with bath time.

Once your baby is watching for 7 to 10 seconds, there’s a good chance the connection is being made. During the learning process, as your baby experiments with his or her hands trying to figure out what you are doing, praise and encourage the effort. Once your infant signs that first word, others will quickly follow. Within the next two or three months, you’ll be amazed that you and the little one are having two-way conversations, many months earlier than had you stuck solely with verbalizing.

So now you know what your baby needs or wants, there’s less anxiety on both sides, and you have a calmer, happier home. Don’t stop there. Babies who sign have a head-start on many development stages. Besides being faster at mastering verbal language, baby signing also increases vocabulary, promotes the early use of complex sentences, and increases interest in books. Hold those college applications for a few years, but you’ve definitely given your child a great advantage for kindergarten. Signing has also taught your infant how to resolve conflicts without kicking and screaming, so expect your child to become the peacemaker in the group when everyone wants to play with the same toy.

Remember the first time your baby, just a day or two old, grabbed your finger, and your heart almost pounded out of your chest. You’ll feel the same way when your infant indicates himself, crosses his arms on his chest, and gestures to you in the sign language expression of, “I love you.”

  Guide for baby sign language

Baby sign language teaches babies a collection of easy to remember and simple gestures to use as a way of communicating. From about 8 months of age babies do not have the ability to speak but can start to understand much of what is being said. Babies from this age can easily be taught to use gestures as a way of communicating.

Signing does not interfere with your baby’s speech or language development; it actually encourages babies to speak sooner and assists to develop a large vocabulary. Once a baby starts verbalizing words he will still find signing useful for those words that are more difficult. You can start teaching baby sign language at any age, even if your child has started saying some words already. Babies up to the age of 2 years can benefit from signing.

Research has shown that teaching your baby sign language can deliver an array of benefits that include:

Encourages greater interest in books and pretend play at an early age

Enriches bond with parents, siblings and carers

Increases self-esteem and self-confidence

Increases communication and learning at a very early age

Helps babies talk sooner

Reduces tantrums, tears and frustration

Helps improve intellectual development

Develops larger vocabularies and helps babies understand more words

To start baby sign language you do not need to attend a course or have any prior knowledge of signing. Baby sign language is designed to be simple and fun and easily learnt by parents to build into their everyday life as a way of communicating with their baby.

To start signing with your baby all you need is an illustrated book listing the available signs. Pick a couple of words that you use daily and start to sign that word every time you say it. Make sure your baby can see your hands when you are signing and ensure that you are consistent. Depending on the baby’s age it may take several weeks before your baby signs back to you but when she does it will all be worth it!

Babies Can

  baby talk earlier

Moms, there’s exciting news. Teaching your baby to use Sign Language is a terrific idea. Not only will it increase the bonding between you and your baby, but a hearing baby can use Sign Language sometimes months earlier than he can speak! Wouldn’t it be great to cut down on the frustration and tantrums at home? You can do it by enabling your baby to “speak” to you in Sign.

Imagine your ten-month-old is thirsty and wants milk, not juice and not water. She begins to fuss. You begin the ritual of checking for a fever; checking the diaper; emptying the baby bag item by item, asking in rising frustration, “Is it your bear? Do you want a cookie? Do you want your pacifier??” You even offer your child a bottle of juice – but the baby wails in disappointment and frustration when she realizes the bottle is filled with a beverage she does NOT want. Now both of you, and everyone within earshot, are completely rattled; the baby is in tears, and you’re on your way as well.

All the child would have to know, and have to do, is make a Sign to you that you both know, and there would be instant communication. This will work even with a pre-verbal child! You could get the child the milk, there would be no tears, and everybody would be happy. Doesn’t that sound great? It’s really much simpler than you think. There are videos just for this, and plenty of books about Sign for you to share with your child as well. Most likely there are “Mommy-And-Me” Sign classes near you!

Teaching your baby to Sign takes little extra time and can give a lifetime of benefits. Children who Sign have been shown to excel emotionally, socially and scholastically. See what’s available for you and your child! It’s fun for everybody, and very beneficial too.
